IGTV is Instagram’s video channel that is rumoured to compete with YouTube in the years to come. Whether or not that’s true, it’s definitely gaining traction and being used by businesses and individuals around the world.

IGTV changes Instagram up a bit

There are some very unique aspects of IGTV that includes vertical video, consistent with how people hold their phones and naturally record video. IGTV is for a longer video that isn’t allowed on regular Instagram accounts.

Another feature that makes it different from those familiar with Instagram is the ability and necessity to use it on a desktop computer. If you are a regular Instagram user, you know that Instagram was designed for phone use and really isn’t conducive to desktop computer use. IGTV makes posting videos simple, fast, and enjoyable, especially if they’re stored and edited on your computer.

If you’re thinking of giving IGTV a whirl, here are a few basics that will help:

  • Use vertical videos
  • MP4 file format
  • Minimum resolution of 720 pixels
  • Videos must be at least 15 seconds long and no more than 10 minutes long
  • Cover images must be 420 by 654 pixels and once uploaded there is no ability (yet) to edit it
